Kia India is preparing to expand its premium lineup, with select dealers beginning to accept unofficial pre-bookings for the Kia Sorento SUV. Positioned as the flagship internal combustion engine (ICE) model in Kia’s Indian portfolio, the three-row SUV is expected to officially launch in October 2026, closely following the debut of the Syros EV.
By bringing the Sorento to India, Kia aims to offer a premium, tech-heavy alternative in the premium family SUV segment, heavily relying on an electrified powertrain to stand out.
Under the Hood: A Strong-Hybrid Powertrain
In a segment traditionally dominated by large diesel and standard petrol engines, the Sorento is expected to carve out a niche with a highly efficient hybrid system:
-
The Engine: The India-spec Sorento is highly anticipated to feature a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol strong-hybrid engine.
-
Performance: While Indian specifications are yet to be finalized, the equivalent global-spec model pairs this engine with an electric motor to produce a combined 238 hp and 380 Nm of torque.
-
Transmission: Power is sent to the wheels via a smooth 6-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox.
-
Drivetrain: The global model is sold in both front-wheel-drive (FWD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) configurations. It remains to be seen if Kia India will offer AWD as standard or limit it to top-spec trims.
Dimensions and Unique Seating Versatility
The Sorento boasts commanding road presence, styled with Kia’s signature “Opposites United” design philosophy. It features vertical LED headlamps, a bold Tiger Nose front grille, and dual-tone 19-inch alloy wheels.
| Dimension | Measurement |
| Length | 4,815 mm |
| Width | 1,900 mm |
| Height | 1,700 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,815 mm |
-
Flexible Cabin Layouts: Globally, the Sorento is configured in 5-, 6-, and 7-seat layouts. If Kia decides to offer all three configurations in India, it will be the only SUV in its class to do so. This allows buyers to choose between maximum cargo capacity, luxurious middle-row captain chairs (6-seater), or maximum family utility (7-seater).
Expected Features & Cabin Tech
As a flagship offering, the Sorento will come packed with high-end convenience and safety technology, mirroring the global cabin:
-
Dual Curved Displays: A seamless housing containing a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display and a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
-
Premium Comforts: Heated and ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, a powered driver’s seat with memory functions, and multi-zone climate control.
-
Safety Suite: Comprehensive Level 2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) including autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and a 360-degree camera system.
Market Positioning, Competition, and Price
Kia is expected to locally assemble the Sorento at its Anantapur facility via Completely Knocked Down (CKD) kits to keep pricing competitive.
-
Expected Price: ₹40 Lakh to ₹50 Lakh (ex-showroom).
-
Key Rivals: It will go head-to-head with premium three-row SUVs like the Skoda Kodiaq and the upcoming Volkswagen Tayron.
The strong-hybrid powertrain will give the Sorento a significant fuel-efficiency edge over these rivals, making it highly attractive to mileage-conscious premium buyers.
