Iran has issued a stern, direct warning to Washington following reports that US President Donald Trump is considering aggressive military operations, including a potential ground maneuver to seize Iran’s primary oil export hub, Kharg Island.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei explicitly warned that American forces would face severe repercussions if they attempted any “adventure” on Iranian territory. He added that there are people in the region who are “counting down the minutes to welcome” US troops with hostile resistance.
The Strategic Prize: Kharg Island
Kharg Island is the undisputed economic heart of Iran. Positioned 55 kilometers off the coast in the Bushehr province, its deep-water geography allows the world’s largest supertankers to dock.
A successful US operation to seize Kharg Island would structurally strangle Iran’s economic lifeline. However, the island’s proximity to the mainland leaves occupying forces heavily exposed to coastal missile batteries, drone swarms, and asymmetrical naval warfare.
Overlapping Treaties and Military Realities
The escalating rhetoric threatens an existing interim diplomatic framework. Tehran maintained that the 14-clause memorandum of understanding signed with the United States features absolute clarity. “There is no ambiguity,” Baghaei stressed, reminding Washington that Iran retains ultimate management over the adjacent Strait of Hormuz in consultation with Oman.
According to reports from The Wall Street Journal, the Trump administration is actively reviewing military options that range from severe airstrikes to amphibious operations targeting both Kharg Island and the heavily fortified “Pickaxe Mountain” complex—a site strongly tied to Iran’s nuclear program.
Security experts note that while the US possesses the necessary naval and amphibious power among its 50,000 Middle East-based personnel to capture the island, holding it would trigger a massive, unpredictable escalation.
