India is rapidly accelerating its crackdown on drug trafficking and abuse as part of a major national push toward a drug-free future.
At the 10th Apex-Level NCORD (Narco-Coordination Centre) meeting in New Delhi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah unveiled the ‘Vision Document 2026-2029’. This new roadmap establishes a highly coordinated strategy designed to shield the nation from the narcotics menace.
Massive Disposal Campaign Underway
As part of this intensified enforcement, the government has launched the Online Drug Disposal Fortnight Campaign. Under this initiative, legal procedures will be followed to destroy approximately 2.09 lakh kg of seized narcotics, valued at an estimated Rs 6,000 crore.
Key Trafficking Hotspots (2020–2025 Data)
Recent data from the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) highlights the massive scale of law enforcement operations across various states, revealing the primary corridors for illegal drug production and transit:
-
Cannabis (Ganja): Odisha has emerged as the country’s primary hotspot, with over 10.6 lakh kg seized. Significant quantities were also intercepted in Andhra Pradesh (5.5 lakh kg), Uttar Pradesh (2.4 lakh kg), Rajasthan (1.6 lakh kg), and Maharashtra (1.6 lakh kg).
-
Opium: Enforcement has heavily targeted northern and central supply routes over the last six years. Rajasthan leads opium recoveries with more than 13 lakh kg, followed by Madhya Pradesh (over 5.1 lakh kg) and Jharkhand (over 3.5 lakh kg). Notable seizures were also recorded in Punjab, Haryana, and Jammu & Kashmir.
The Bottom Line: The soaring volume of large-scale seizures and the rollout of unified national operations demonstrate that India’s anti-drug strategy is actively producing tangible results on the ground, signaling a powerful momentum toward a “Drug-Free India.”
