Following a fresh spell of rain and thunderstorms that brought a notable dip in temperatures across Delhi NCR, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) expects weather conditions to gradually improve. While the active wet spell is beginning to ease in the northern parts of the country, heavy rainfall warnings remain active for parts of South India.
Delhi NCR and North India: Showers and Snowfall Cool the Region
Delhi NCR experienced a wet spell on Thursday, October 15, resulting in cooler daytime conditions. According to the IMD, Friday, October 16, will likely see generally cloudy skies with a small chance of very light to light rain at a few places during the early morning to noon hours, accompanied by minor thunderstorms and lightning.
-
Temperatures: Delhi’s maximum temperature is projected to hover between 29°C and 31°C, while the minimum temperature is expected to range from 18°C to 20°C.
-
Winds: Predominant surface winds are expected from the southeast at around 15 kmph during the morning, picking up slightly to 18 kmph from the east by the afternoon before easing back into the evening and night.
-
Neighboring States: Isolated to scattered showers, alongside gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph (occasionally gusting up to 50 kmph), are forecast across Haryana, Chandigarh, Punjab, and parts of Uttar Pradesh.
Western Himalayas Witness Early Snow
Higher-altitude regions of North India woke up to blankets of fresh snow on October 15 as icy winds swept through Himachal Pradesh. Locations across Lahaul-Spiti, Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, and Kinnaur recorded fresh snowfalls ranging between 2 to 5 centimeters in spots like Koksar and Keylong. Lower-lying towns like Mandi and Bilaspur experienced heavy downpours that significantly dropped daytime temperatures.
According to the IMD, rainfall activity is anticipated to persist over Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad, as well as Himachal Pradesh (stretching into October 17) and Uttarakhand (continuing through October 18, accompanied by potential thunderstorms and lightning). East Rajasthan has also seen isolated to scattered rainfall through October 16.
Southern Peninsula on High Alert for Heavy Rain
While northern weather activity subdues, the weather charts highlight intense downpours shifting southward. The IMD has warned of isolated very heavy rainfall over:
-
Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal during October 15–16.
-
South Interior Karnataka on October 16.
-
Kerala and Mahe (which saw heavy spells on October 15).
