A total of 84 people, including Border Security Force (BSF) personnel and civilians, were rushed to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal on Thursday after falling severely ill with suspected food poisoning.
According to Manipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam, the affected individuals had consumed breakfast—consisting of puri and potato curry—at around 8:30 AM at Don Bosco School in the Phayeng area. Shortly after, they began experiencing repeated episodes of vomiting and diarrhea, accompanied by a sudden drop in blood pressure.
The group included personnel from Company D of the 58th Battalion of the BSF, who had arrived in Phayeng just a day prior on Wednesday. The exact breakdown between security personnel and civilians among the 84 hospitalized individuals has not yet been finalized.
Visiting the hospital to assess the situation firsthand, Home Minister Konthoujam provided an update on their conditions:
“Altogether, 84 have come to RIMS. They are stable, except for one case.”
Konthoujam commended the RIMS director and medical staff for their swift response and effective management of the crisis, noting that no shortages of medical supplies or additional resources have been reported. He also urged the public to remain calm, assuring that all patients are receiving proper medical care as authorities work to officially determine the exact cause of the illness.
