A pilot and co-pilot have tragically lost their lives after a US-registered private jet crashed and burst into flames during an emergency landing at La Romana International Airport in the Dominican Republic. Authorities have confirmed that no other passengers or crew members were on board the aircraft.
The Flight Path and Emergency
The Gulfstream G200 twin-engine business jet was bound for Austin, Texas, when severe mechanical complications derailed the flight:
-
The Alert: The flight crew declared an emergency approximately 16 nautical miles southwest of La Romana.
-
The Return: The crew immediately turned back to the airport in an attempt to make an urgent landing.
-
The Impact: Upon touching down, the aircraft experienced a rough landing, immediately caught fire, and exploded into a massive fireball.
Footage circulating on social media showed the fuselage completely engulfed in intense flames, while subsequent clips showed a towering plume of black smoke over the airfield as emergency trucks sprayed streams of water to suppress the blaze.
Official Investigation Underway
A formal investigation has been launched by aviation authorities to pinpoint the exact technical failures that caused the crash.
According to an official statement shared on X by the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC):
“Aviation authorities activated the corresponding protocols and are conducting the necessary investigations to determine the causes of the incident. Both the IDAC and the CIAA (Civil Aviation Accident Investigation Commission) will provide additional information as the investigation progresses.”
This tragic event marks another severe aviation incident for the Caribbean nation, which relies heavily on tourism for its economy. In 2021, a separate private plane crash departing from Las Americas International Airport in the capital city of Santo Domingo claimed the lives of nine people.
