A tragic incident in Pune’s Hadapsar area has claimed the life of a four-and-a-half-year-old girl after a heavy iron slide collapsed on her at a residential playground. The incident has sparked a police investigation into the maintenance and safety protocols of the housing society.
The Incident
The accident took place on April 7, around 12:30 pm, within a designated play area of a housing complex in the Magarpatta neighborhood. While the child was playing, the iron slide dislodged from its position and fell directly onto her head.
Despite being rushed immediately to a nearby private hospital, the child succumbed to her severe head injuries during the course of her treatment.
Charges of Negligence
Following a complaint filed by the girl’s father, the Pune police have registered a case against the housing society’s chairman and committee members. The primary allegations include:
-
Failure to Maintain: Equipment in the children’s playground was allegedly not repaired or maintained regularly.
-
Hazardous Equipment: The iron slide was reportedly old and in a dangerous state, yet it was not removed or cordoned off.
-
Lapse in Safety: The society management is accused of failing to prioritize the safety of residents, particularly children using the common amenities.
A Growing Concern for Urban Safety
This tragedy highlights a critical issue regarding the safety of private playgrounds in large housing complexes. While these areas are marketed as safe spaces for families, the legal responsibility for the structural integrity of the equipment rests with the society’s governing body.
Local authorities and safety experts often emphasize that iron structures are particularly prone to corrosion and require frequent inspections to prevent such fatal mechanical failures.
