An extraordinary mid-journey emergency turned into a heartwarming success story after a pregnant woman safely delivered a baby onboard the Avadh Assam Express, thanks to the swift coordination of railway staff and a fellow passenger who happened to be a nurse.
The incident occurred on June 14 aboard Train No. 15910 (Lalgarh-Dibrugarh) Avadh Assam Express. As the train approached the Rangiya railway station in Assam, the passenger went into active labor, prompting an immediate distress call to railway authorities.
A Perfectly Timed Group Effort
Recognizing the urgency, railway officials immediately mobilized a network of support, alerting the Rangiya Control, Commercial, and Medical Departments. A specialized medical team, led by Dr. Sarat Chandra (Divisional Medical Officer of the Rangiya Division), was dispatched to the platform ahead of the train’s arrival.
Inside the compartment, passengers and staff stepped up to manage the crisis:
-
The Co-Passenger: Krishnama Goldsmith Bezbaruah, a professional nurse from the Jorhat Christian Mission Hospital who happened to be traveling on the same train, took charge of the delivery.
-
The Onboard Crew: The train’s coach attendant and fellow passengers assisted the nurse to ensure privacy and comfort.
With their combined efforts, the woman successfully and safely gave birth to her baby right there on the train.
Post-Natal Care and Current Status
Upon pulling into Rangiya station, the newborn and mother were immediately received by Dr. Chandra’s waiting medical team. They were initially rushed to the Rangiya Railway Hospital for emergency assessment.
Current Update: Because the baby was born prematurely, both mother and child were later transferred via a railway ambulance to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for specialized, high-tier observation. Officials have confirmed that both are currently in stable condition.
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has publicly commended its staff for their agility and extended a special note of gratitude to Nurse Bezbaruah for her lifesaving voluntarism. Railway officials noted that the event beautifully underscores the vital importance of seamless, coordinated emergency response systems.
