The upcoming 2027 assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Manipur, and Goa will be held as per their original schedule in February next year, government sources confirmed on Wednesday. The clarification puts an end to widespread political speculation that the polls might be advanced due to scheduling conflicts with the national Census and the grand Kumbh Mela.
The Census and Election Duty Conflict
Speculation regarding early elections arose when several political parties pointed out a logistical bottleneck: the second phase of the national Census was slated to coincide with the standard election timeline.
Because the government utilizes the same pool of administrative staff and teachers for both Census enumeration and election duties, critics argued that holding both simultaneously would be unfeasible.
The Administrative Solution
Rather than shifting the election timeline, sources reveal the government plans to tweak the Census schedule instead:
-
Phase 1 (House Listing): Currently underway between April and September.
-
Phase 2 (Population & Caste Enumeration): Originally expected mid-winter, this phase may be conducted slightly earlier than planned to ensure government staff are completely free for election deployment by February.
Managing the Kumbh Mela Factor
Another major point of discussion was the Kumbh Mela, scheduled to take place in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, from January 14, 2027, to April 20, 2027. Because the massive religious gathering demands heavy security and administrative focus, rumor mills suggested state polls might be pulled forward to late this year.
However, top sources have dismissed any such proposals, indicating that the Election Commission will likely structure the voting phases strategically—potentially scheduling Uttarakhand to vote last—ensuring that the Kumbh arrangements remain entirely undisturbed.
Key Legislative Deadlines
The five states under review have assembly terms expiring between March and May:
| State | Assembly Term Expiry Date |
| Manipur | March 13 |
| GoA | March 14 |
| Punjab | March 16 |
| Uttar Pradesh | May 22 |
| Uttarakhand | May 28 |
Officials reiterate that the standard democratic timeline will be maintained, balancing rigorous data collection for the national Census with a seamless voting process.
