While most smart TV manufacturers continue to compete over panel brightness, screen thinness, and speaker wattage, Indian home entertainment brand Lumio is shifting its strategy toward solving everyday user experiences. Founded by Raghu Reddy and Kailash Sankarnarayanan, the company is prioritizing software-driven content discovery and seamless mobile-to-TV integration.
Solving Daily Frustrations Through Experience
According to Sankarnarayanan, two major pain points in the smart TV market remain largely unaddressed by hardware specifications:
-
Sluggish performance over time as TVs age.
-
“What to watch” fatigue, caused by fragmented streaming platforms.
Rather than treating the TV as an isolated screen, Lumio aims to bridge the gap between content discovered on smartphones and what users watch on their big screens.
“Our fundamental belief is to identify problems people face in their experience and build both hardware and software solutions that keep making it better.”
— Kailash Sankarnarayanan, Co-Founder, Lumio
Key Software Innovations: Agentic AI & Cross-Device Sync
Lumio is addressing discovery through its built-in software suite, centered around its proprietary app TLDR and experimental AI projects:
-
TLDR App: Pre-loaded on Lumio TVs to aggregate and organize content recommendations across categories, music, and sports.
-
Project Neo (Agentic AI): Allows users to pair their WhatsApp with the TV via a QR code. Users can send natural-language text or voice prompts (e.g., asking for a film with a specific actor in a specific scene) in over nine Indian languages to instantly locate where the content is streaming.
-
Social Media Sync (Beta): Users can forward Instagram Reels directly to Lumio’s official handle; the system identifies the featured movie or show and lists relevant titles on the TV screen.
-
Upcoming Features: Future updates will introduce custom WhatsApp “collections” that automatically sync to the TV UI upon startup, as well as a simplified photo-sharing feature via chat to easily display family photos on screen.
Reddy noted that near-term monetization of these features is not a priority; the current focus remains strictly on product adoption and user experience.
Price Hikes in the TV Industry Are “Inevitable”
Addressing global supply chain challenges, ongoing component cost pressures, and chip shortages, the founders confirmed that consumers should prepare for rising smart TV prices across the market.
-
Industry Impact: While smartphones and laptops have already absorbed price hikes, smart TVs are now experiencing the ripple effects of rising Bill of Materials (BOM) costs.
-
Timeline: Industry-wide price increases are expected to materialize over the next six months.
“I think it’s inevitable. Every brand operating is impacted, so everyone will increase prices, including us.”
— Raghu Reddy, Co-Founder, Lumio
