The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is rolling out a major driver-focused initiative to integrate puncture repair shops and vehicle service facilities across all national highways and expressways. The move is designed to minimize breakdown delays, eliminate long stranded windows, and significantly enhance traveler safety, especially on access-controlled expressways where exit points are far apart.
Execution is being spearheaded by NHAI’s wholly-owned subsidiary, National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML), which has ordered field offices to immediately fast-track these mechanical setups.
Key Structural Highlights of the Plan
-
Wayside Amenities (WSAs) Integration: The repair shops will be embedded directly into India’s expanding network of Wayside Amenities. These massive hubs span roughly four hectares each and are strategically placed at regular intervals of 40 to 60 kilometers.
-
The PPP Rollout Model: These modern rest stops are being constructed using a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework. While private operators already had the flexibility to open workshops under their concession agreements, NHAI is now actively pushing them to accelerate implementation to resolve growing commuter complaints.
-
All-in-One Commuter Hubs: The new repair stalls will complement infrastructure already standard at completed WSAs, including:
-
Fuel stations and dedicated electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.
-
Food courts, restaurants, and hygienic washroom zones.
-
Dedicated rest quarters and secure parking spaces for long-haul commercial truck drivers.
-
Critical Road Safety Implications
The absence of structured roadside assistance has historically been a significant vulnerability on newer expressways. Stranded vehicles parked on fast-lane shoulders pose extreme rear-end collision risks. By ensuring that emergency puncture services and basic mechanical support are never more than a few kilometers away, NHAI expects to drastically reduce vehicle downtime and prevent highway secondary accidents.
To protect yourself against highway emergencies before these amenities fully scale up, it is highly recommended to carry emergency roadside tools in your trunk, such as a heavy-duty tubeless tire puncture repair kit or a digital portable car tire inflator.
