Delhi Police took preventive action against student and political activists in the capital ahead of the planned ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ protest march at Connaught Place.
While All India Students’ Association (AISA) National President Neha Bora was released early Saturday morning following her preventive detention, Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke was placed under formal preventive arrest and scheduled to appear before a Special Executive Magistrate (SEM) court.
Key Legal Developments & Status
-
Neha Bora (AISA Chief): Released early Saturday after authorities completed procedures under Section 65 of the Delhi Police Act. Following her release, Bora criticized the detention practices, alleging they were being used to instill fear and demand accountability from ordinary citizens exercising their constitutional rights.
-
Abhijeet Dipke (CJP Founder): Placed under preventive arrest under Sections 126 and 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) over concerns regarding a potential breach of peace. Police cited non-compliance with prior notices prohibiting visits to Central Park in Connaught Place and alleged violations of conditions set in an earlier ₹50,000 peace bond. He is scheduled to be produced before the SEM court.
Context of the ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ Protests
-
Core Demands: The march is part of broader demonstrations staged by the CJP, Opposition parties, student organizations, and civil society groups demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged electoral roll irregularities and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
-
Escalation & Security: Clashes broke out near Palika Bazaar as security personnel cordoned off Central Park and deployed additional forces, including the Rapid Action Force (RAF). Around 150 people were detained during the crackdown to maintain public order.
