Mahindra & Mahindra has officially launched the highly anticipated update to its iconic lifestyle SUV in the Indian market, now officially named the Thar OG. Carrying an introductory starting price of Rs 10.32 lakh (ex-showroom), this marks the first major update for the three-door model since its initial blockbuster debut in 2020. Taking heavy design and technological cues from its larger sibling, the Thar Roxx, the Thar OG aims to blend classic ruggedness with modern refinement.
Pricing and Variants
The Thar OG is structured across three core trim levels—AXT, LXT, and ZXT—and offers a staggering 15 distinct powertrain, transmission, and drivetrain combinations across both Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) and Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) layouts. Introductory prices top out at Rs 18.99 lakh (ex-showroom) for the range-topping variants, applicable for bookings and deliveries made through November 30, 2026. Official customer deliveries are slated to kick off on October 11, 2026.
Design Evolution
Drawing inspiration from the Thar Roxx, the Thar OG receives a striking visual makeover while maintaining its signature, butch stance. The front fascia boasts a completely revised grille flanked by modern LED headlamps featuring C-shaped LED DRLs. The bumpers have also been reshaped, and higher variants now roll on striking new 19-inch alloy wheels. To complete the fresh aesthetic, Mahindra has introduced two appealing new paint options: Artemis Silver and Jeans Blue.
Upgraded Interiors and Comfort
Step inside, and you’ll find a cabin that feels both familiar and notably elevated. The Thar OG introduces plush Truffle Brown leatherette upholstery paired with contrasting black elements. Practicality has also taken a step forward, with the second row now featuring a dedicated armrest with integrated cup holders. Furthermore, Mahindra claims significant improvements in lowering NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) levels inside the cabin for a quieter highway cruise.
On the technology front, the SUV is now equipped with a modern 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system supporting wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, complemented by a crisp MID instrument cluster, wireless smartphone charging, cruise control, and rear AC vents.
Safety Suite
Safety has received a massive boost in this iteration. The Thar OG comes standard with six airbags, all-four disc brakes, and an electronic stability program with roll-over mitigation. Additional safety features include front parking sensors, a rear-view camera, traction control, hill-hold control, a tyre direction monitoring system, and a durable hardtop design.
Powertrains and Mechanical Tweaks
Under the hood, the Thar OG carries forward three tried-and-tested engine options:
- 1.5-Liter CRDe Diesel (RWD): Puts out 116 hp and 300 Nm of torque.
- 2.2-Liter mHawk Diesel: Generates 150 hp and 330 Nm of torque (available in RWD and 4WD configurations).
- 2.0-Liter mStallion Turbo-Petrol: The performance powerhouse, pushing out 159 hp and 330 Nm of torque.
Crucially, the biggest updates lie underneath the skin. The Thar OG shifts to an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system to vastly ease low-speed maneuverability. It also features a heavily reworked chassis and a revolutionary suspension setup utilizing Da Vinci Dampers with Frequency Dependent Damping (FDD) alongside a rear Pentalink suspension featuring a Watts Link—a segment-first for a body-on-frame vehicle. For off-road enthusiasts, 4WD variants retain the electronic locking differential while adding dedicated terrain response modes for Mud, Sand, and Snow.
