Maruti Suzuki India is actively working to boost women’s participation in the manufacturing sector through its Japan-India Institute for Manufacturing (JIM) in Uncha Majra, Manesar. The company has announced an ambitious goal to achieve 30 per cent female enrolment by the 2028-29 academic year, building a stronger pipeline of skilled women professionals for the automotive industry.
Key Initiatives to Drive Enrolment
To bridge the gender gap and attract more young women to technical trades, Maruti Suzuki has introduced a 100 per cent tuition fee waiver for female students starting this academic year.
Additional measures implemented to foster a secure and inclusive campus ecosystem include:
-
Dedicated hostel facilities designed specifically for women.
-
Increased female representation among faculty and support staff.
-
Enhanced support systems tailored for students pursuing technical trades.
Rahul Bharti, Senior Executive Officer (Corporate Affairs) at Maruti Suzuki, noted that while talented women exist across the country, many remain unaware of career pathways in manufacturing. Highlighting recent successes, the company pointed out that two female students from the Manesar institute recently emerged as Haryana state toppers in manufacturing trades.
About the Japan-India Institute for Manufacturing (JIM)
JIMs are a bilateral initiative between the governments of India and Japan designed to cultivate world-class, industry-ready talent. Maruti Suzuki operates four such institutes across the country:
-
Uncha Majra, Manesar (Haryana)
-
Sonipat (Haryana)
-
Mehsana (Gujarat)
-
Gandhinagar (Gujarat)
The institutes utilize the Dual System of Training (DST), blending rigorous classroom theory with practical shop-floor training. Students undergo roughly seven months of paid industrial training annually, equipping them with hands-on experience, Japanese manufacturing principles, shop-floor efficiency, and workplace discipline.
