It’s fascinating how a casual chat over home-baked banana bread can spotlight a rather glaring reality about how Bollywood operates.
During her appearance on filmmaker Farah Khan’s YouTube vlog, actor Dia Mirza shared a hilarious—yet slightly jarring—throwback memory from the very beginning of her career. When she was just a 19-year-old newcomer filming Tumko Na Bhool Paayenge (2002), her co-star Salman Khan dropped a prediction that left her completely stunned: “Dekhna ek din tu meri maa ka role karegi” (One day, you will play my mother).
How the Joke Unfolded on Set
Dia explained that the comment happened while she, Salman, and comedian Rajpal Yadav were waiting between shots.

The Observation: Dia noticed that the actress hired to play Salman’s on-screen mother had recently given birth to a baby in real life, making her remarkably young for the role.
-
The Exchange: When Dia pointed out to Salman that his “mother” was actually quite young, Salman didn’t miss a beat, telling her not to worry because the exact same trajectory would happen to her.

The Subtext of Bollywood’s Age Dynamics
While Dia recalled the memory with a laugh, the anecdote highlights the long-standing, often lopsided age politics of the Hindi film industry.
The Double Standard: Leading men in Bollywood routinely sustain their tracks as romantic heroes well into their 50s and 60s, consistently paired with women half their age. Conversely, the women who debut alongside them are frequently transitioned into older character roles or maternal figures much earlier.
When Farah suggested that Dia should share the screen with Salman again, Dia candidly noted that he primarily works with much younger actors now. Farah playfully pushed back, pointing out that he is currently working with Chitrangada Singh on his upcoming project Maatrubhumi (previously titled Battle of Galwan), before joking that if a mother’s role opens up, Salman should let them know.
A Sanctuary Built on That Very Film
Despite Salman’s bizarre prediction, Tumko Na Bhool Paayenge remains a deeply significant milestone for Dia. She revealed to Farah that the acting fees she earned from the film allowed her to purchase her very first house at just 19 years old.
Describing the home as her personal sanctuary and refuge from the city’s noise, Dia proudly shared that it marked the very first time a woman in her family had ever owned a piece of property.
