A sharp diplomatic spat has erupted between US President Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni following the G7 Summit in France. Trump took to social media to double down on his claims that the Italian leader repeatedly sought a photograph with him, using the opportunity to heavily criticize her domestic standing and foreign policy choices.
Trump Double-Down on Photo Controversy
Responding to Meloni’s fierce denial, President Trump posted on X (formerly Twitter) claiming that she had repeatedly pressed him for a joint photo-op. He alleged that Meloni is orchestrating a public spat to deflect from her sliding approval ratings at home.
Donald Trump on X: “She is doing poorly in Italy with her level of popularity, possibly because she turned down the United States of America, a Country that truly loves and protects Italy, when it came to denying Iran from obtaining or developing a Nuclear Weapon… [She] wants to be friends to get her numbers up.”
This online escalation followed a brief interview Trump gave to Italy’s La7 television channel, where he originally mocked the prime minister. “She begged me to take a picture with her,” Trump had claimed. “She wanted a picture with me so badly. I wouldn’t have taken it, but I felt sorry for her.”
Escalating Geopolitical Grievances
Beyond the personal bickering over a photograph, Trump’s retaliatory remarks exposed deeper fractures within the NATO alliance regarding global security, particularly concerning the conflict involving Iran:
-
Denial of Airspace: Trump explicitly blamed Meloni for restricting American military operations, stating she refused to let the US use Italian landing strips and runways during the Iran war, causing a “great logistical inconvenience.”
-
NATO Funding Grievances: The US President weaponized defense spending, complaining that Italy withheld strategic cooperation despite the fact that “the U.S. contributes hundreds of Billions of Dollars a year to protect Italy, and other ‘so-called’ NATO Allies.”
“Italy and I Never Beg”: Meloni’s Rebuke
The public back-and-forth began when Prime Minister Meloni explicitly dismissed Trump’s narrative as a total fabrication, expressing dismay over how the US President treats strategic partners.
Giorgia Meloni on X: “Donald Trump’s statements are completely made up, I’m frankly appalled. I don’t know why the President of the United States behaves this way with his own allies; after all, it’s not the first time it’s happened. I can only say it’s a shame that he doesn’t show the same determination with the enemies of the West… However, one thing he must remember: I and Italy never beg.”
Meloni’s sharp retort highlighted a growing frustration among Western allies regarding Trump’s unpredictable approach to traditional alliances—contrasting his harsh rhetoric toward democratic partners with what she characterized as an “accommodating” posture toward foreign adversaries.
