A tragic incident has shaken the Indian diaspora following the death of Venkatesh Doppalapudi, a 33-year-old IT professional and student from Andhra Pradesh, India. His vehicle was swept away during a sudden and severe flash flood in the state of Kansas, United States.
Doppalapudi, who originally hailed from the Bapatla district in Andhra Pradesh, was a resident of Omaha, Nebraska, and was living in the US on an H-1B visa.
The Incident: Caught in a Severe Storm
The tragedy unfolded on Saturday afternoon while Doppalapudi was driving back north from Houston.

Torrential Rainfall: Severe regional storms had rapidly dropped more than 6 inches (15 cm) of rain across south-central Kansas, turning quiet roads into raging torrents.

The Flash Flood: As Doppalapudi drove along South Oliver Road near Wellington in Sumner County, sudden flash floodwaters completely overwhelmed his vehicle.

Failed Rescue Attempts: Eyewitnesses alerted emergency authorities after seeing the vehicle submerged near a bridge with Doppalapudi trapped inside. Sumner County emergency responders rushed to the scene but were initially prevented from entering the water due to dangerously violent currents.
Following a multi-agency search operation utilizing local police drones and the Kansas Highway Patrol Air Unit, search teams tragically recovered his body the next day (Sunday) roughly 1.3 miles away from where his car was swept away.
Government Support and Repatriation Efforts
The Consulate General of India in Houston issued a statement expressing profound grief and detailing their current course of action:
“The Consulate General of India in Houston is deeply saddened by the tragic demise of Mr. Venkatesh Doppalapudi, an Indian student from Andhra Pradesh, who lost his life in flash floodwaters in Kansas. The Consulate extends heartfelt condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time. The Consulate is in touch with the family and close contacts and is coordinating with the relevant authorities to provide all possible assistance.”
The consulate is currently interfacing with Kansas state law enforcement and family representatives to fast-track legal formalities. Concurrently, a crowdfunding campaign has been launched on GoFundMe to offset transportation, funeral, and repatriation costs to bring his remains back to his native village in India for final rites.
