Bollywood actor-politician Kangana Ranaut has officially taken back absolute control of her social media accounts from her digital PR team. Speaking at a promotional event in Mumbai for her upcoming film Bharat Bhagya Vidhata, Ranaut criticized the overly cautious, tightly curated nature of corporate-managed celebrity handles, stating she refuses to look “apologetic” just to exist in the public digital space.
“Like Writing a Letter to the Headmaster”
Ranaut revealed her frustration with the overly polite and sanitized captions her team used to draft for her. When asked if she has started interacting with fans directly, she recalled a blunt conversation she had with her staff:
“I asked my social media team, ‘What is this? Are you writing a letter to the headmaster with so much respect? What kind of captions are these? It feels like you are apologising to stay alive. So I said, no, this is not going to go like that. Simple right things. I am eating this, so simply write this.'”
The actress explained that constantly living under the social media microscope creates a culture where public figures feel pressured to overthink every outfit, photo angle, and statement. While she admitted that stars often look back at past decisions or statements and realize they “could have done better,” she firmly believes celebrities shouldn’t have to navigate their daily lives feeling constantly defensive.
A History of Social Media Volatility
Ranaut’s decision to personally steer her digital identity carries significant weight given her turbulent history with social media platforms:
-
May 2021 Suspension: Her official X (formerly Twitter) account was permanently banned following repeated violations of the platform’s hateful conduct and abusive behavior policies, specifically regarding controversial commentary on West Bengal post-election violence.
-
January 2023 Reinstatement: After an absence of nearly two years, her account was restored.
Since returning, she has actively used her personal handle to voice unfiltered social and political commentary, while frequently shutting down media rumors regarding her personal life.
Dismissing Romance Rumors with Chirag Paswan
Alongside her social media takeover, Ranaut addressed and dismissed recent viral rumors claiming she was secretly marrying politician and former co-star Chirag Paswan.
The duo shared the screen 15 years prior in the 2011 romantic drama Miley Naa Miley Hum, which marked Paswan’s brief acting debut before he pivoted full-time into politics.
“No, no, Chirag is a friend. When I see him, I think of a friend. There’s no romance happening, let me be honest,” Ranaut clarified. “He did his film with me 10 years ago. Agar romance hota toh aaj humare bacche hote (If there was a romance, we would have kids by now). It’s just that friendly vibe you get from somebody who is kind of your type — in a way he’s also from the film industry. So I feel very good around him.”
On the professional front, Ranaut is currently balancing political duties alongside the promotion of Bharat Bhagya Vidhata, following her performance as former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in her directorial venture Emergency.
