The Indian Embassy in the United States has issued a strong objection to The New York Times (NYT) over its framing of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in a recent headline, labeling the phrase “Pakistani Kashmir” as “misleading and incorrect”.
Reacting to an NYT report covering violent clashes during local elections in the region—headlined “Clashes Erupt in Pakistani Kashmir as Voting in Local Election Begins”—the diplomatic mission publicly clarified New Delhi’s official stance via a post on X.
“Misleading and incorrect headline by @nytimes. There is no Pakistani Kashmir, only Pakistan-occupied Kashmir,” the embassy posted. “The Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh have been, are and will always remain an integral and inalienable part of India. Pakistan has illegally occupied parts of these territories and is now using violence against the occupied people.”
Background on the Protests and NYT Report
The report focused on a crackdown by Pakistani security forces in Mirpur against members of the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), a civil rights group demonstrating against local police violence and regional elections.
Key developments surrounding the unrest include:
-
Escalating Casualties: Security forces used lethal force against a march from Rawalakote to Muzaffarabad, leaving over 30 civilians dead and at least 33 injured, including Usman Nazir, brother of JAAC Central Committee member Umar Nazir.
-
Core Grievances: Protests have intensified over soaring living costs, political marginalization, systemic economic exploitation, and human rights abuses against minorities.
-
Electoral Opposition: New Delhi described the local elections as an attempt by Islamabad to camouflage its illegal occupation and obscure administrative oppression in the region.
-
Human Rights Calls: The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, an independent rights body, called for an immediate halt to the violence and an impartial investigation into the deaths and injuries.
India continues to maintain its long-standing position that the entire Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh remain an integral, sovereign, and inalienable part of the nation.
