The Toll of a Profound Performance: Naseeruddin Shah’s Transformation
Main Vaapas Aaunga weaves a complex narrative spanning from the 1947 Partition to modern times, heavily leaning on themes of love, displacement, memory, and generational trauma. At the emotional center of the film is the 75-year-old veteran Naseeruddin Shah, who portrays an elderly man battling advanced Alzheimer’s and dementia, desperately wishing to visit his ancestral home in Sargodha (now in Pakistan).
Director Imtiaz Ali recently opened up about how intensely demanding the role was for the veteran actor, both physically and emotionally.
“One thing which was very challenging is the fact that Naseer, such a profound actor, had to be bedridden for almost the entire film. He would come and take three hours to get ready because he’s playing older than his age. There were all of these things that would be stuck to his body because he’s a patient, the ECG leads would be stuck to his chest, and his hair would have to be shaved off.” — Imtiaz Ali
With strong critical focus on Naseeruddin Shah’s heavy prosthetic transformation and the film’s poignant subject matter, the makers will be heavily relying on positive word-of-mouth to drive growth over the Saturday and Sunday weekend box office window.
