Google has officially launched Gemini Personal Intelligence in India, transforming the AI from a standard chatbot into a deeply integrated personal assistant. By connecting to your Google workspace (Gmail, Photos, YouTube, and more), Gemini can now cross-reference your personal data to answer complex questions like, “When is my flight, and what was that hotel recommendation my brother emailed me?”
The feature is currently available for Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra subscribers, with a wider rollout expected shortly. However, because it is turned off by default, you’ll need to manually configure it to see any real benefits.
How to Enable Personal Intelligence
-
Open the Gemini app.
-
Navigate to Settings > Personal Intelligence.
-
Tap Connected Apps and toggle on the services you want Gemini to access.
5 Settings to Change Immediately for Better Results
To get the most out of this update while maintaining control over your data, here are the five adjustments you should make right away:
1. Activate the “App Connections” Toggle
Since the feature is an “opt-in” service, Gemini remains a generic chatbot until you give it permission to “talk” to your other apps. If you don’t turn this on, Gemini won’t be able to find your flight tickets or summarize your recent emails.
2. Curate Your Connected Apps
You don’t have to give Gemini access to everything. Be strategic:
-
Link Gmail: Essential for tracking travel, bills, and bookings.
-
Link Photos: Great for finding specific screenshots or memories using natural language.
-
Link YouTube: Best for personalized video recommendations based on your history.
3. Master the “Source Check”
Always ask Gemini, “Where did you get this information?” Personal Intelligence provides citations. Checking these sources helps you verify that the AI isn’t hallucinating and ensures it is pulling from the correct email or document.
4. Toggle “Temporary Chat” for Sensitive Queries
If you need to ask a question that you don’t want influenced by your personal data—or if you’re researching something sensitive—switch to Temporary Chat mode. This prevents Gemini from accessing your personal context or saving that specific interaction to your history.
5. Use the Feedback Loop
Personal Intelligence is still in its “learning” phase. If Gemini misinterprets an email or pulls the wrong photo:
-
Use the thumbs-down icon.
-
Provide a quick clarification in the follow-up. This direct feedback helps the model better understand your specific data patterns over time.
The Bottom Line
Gemini’s Personal Intelligence is designed to bridge the gap between “searching the web” and “searching your life.” While Google clarifies that this personal data is not used to directly train its global AI models, users should remain mindful of which apps they connect to maintain their preferred level of privacy.
