A heartbreaking tragedy has struck a newlywed couple in Georgia, United States. Twenty-six-year-old Dave Fiji, an Indian-origin commercial airline pilot, was killed in a helicopter crash alongside the aircraft’s pilot just hours after celebrating his wedding.
His new bride, Jessni, miraculously survived the impact but spent hours trapped in the wreckage before being rescued.
A Dream Wedding Cut Short
Dave Fiji, a first officer for Delta Air Lines whose family roots trace back to Kerala, India, married Jessni on Friday. The couple, who met a decade ago at their local church, celebrated their marriage with roughly 400 guests at an event venue in Dawsonville, Georgia.
Following the reception, the couple boarded a Robinson R66 helicopter for a special grand exit. The short flight was supposed to transport them to the DeKalb-Peachtree Airport before they headed to a downtown Atlanta hotel to begin their honeymoon.
Instead, the helicopter went down in a heavily wooded, remote area of Dawson County shortly after takeoff.
Pre-Flight Weather Warnings Ignored
As a professional airline pilot, Dave reportedly expressed severe reservations about the flying conditions before the aircraft took off.
“Since my son was a pilot, he told the pilot that there is zero visibility, and when there is zero visibility like this, we never fly,” his father, George Fiji, told local media.
According to the family, the helicopter pilot dismissed the concerns, suggesting they would simply circumvent the poor visibility by flying at a higher altitude.
A Nurse’s Nightmare: A Six-Hour Ordeal
The remote location of the crash significantly delayed emergency response efforts. Jessni, a registered nurse, remained trapped inside the mangled aircraft for nearly six hours before search-and-rescue teams located the site.
When she regained consciousness, she realized her husband had already passed away.
-
Injuries: Jessni survived with cuts and bruises and is currently recovering at a metro Atlanta hospital.
-
Current Status: Family members describe her as completely devastated but physically stabilizing.
Ongoing Investigation
The identity of the helicopter pilot has not yet been publicly released by local authorities. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched a full investigation into the wreckage to determine the definitive cause of the crash, with weather conditions and visibility expected to be a primary focus of the inquiry.
