India’s long-term strategy to transform itself into a global military manufacturing hub is yielding unprecedented returns. According to official data released by the Ministry of Defence, the country’s defence exports climbed to an all-time high of ₹38,424 crore in FY2025-26.
This milestone marks a staggering 62.66% annual jump from the previous fiscal year’s figure of ₹23,622 crore. The single-year increase of ₹14,802 crore stands as the largest annual export expansion in Indian history, underscoring surging international trust in “Made-in-India” defense systems.
The Numbers Behind the Boom
The surge in export volume is heavily backed by an expanding domestic ecosystem, with total indigenous defense production reaching a record ₹1.78 lakh crore in FY26.
A breakdown of the export data reveals that both state-backed and private sectors are growing rapidly:
-
Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs): Contributed the lion’s share at 54.84% of total exports. Driven by massive international hardware deliveries, DPSU outbound shipments experienced a phenomenal 151% year-on-year surge.
-
Private Sector Enterprises: Accounted for the remaining 45.16% of total exports. The private sector maintained a steady upward trajectory with a 14% year-on-year growth rate, reflecting a diversifying industrial base.
Breaking Import Chains: A Structural Shift
For industry leaders, this milestone signals a profound structural shift away from India’s traditional role as one of the world’s largest importers of foreign weaponry. The focus has rapidly evolved from basic manufacturing under license to sovereign engineering and design capability.
A prime example of this transition is Taural India’s domestic development of the Cylinder Block Crankcase (CBCC) for the Sarath Infantry Combat Vehicle (BMP-II). By engineering this complex aluminum casting locally, India successfully broke a 34-year-on-year import reliance on Russia, saving the exchequer roughly ₹10.5 crore annually.
Technology and Global Partnerships
The nature of modern warfare—now heavily defined by speed, asymmetric tactics, and automated systems—is driving massive local innovation in AI-enabled surveillance, anti-drone tech, and electronic warfare platforms.
To seize this momentum, global defense innovators are actively localizing operations within Indian borders:
-
The Drone Ecosystem: Private firm Shield AI recently secured a $90 million partnership with JSW Defence to establish localized manufacturing and maintenance setups for its V-BAT unmanned aircraft system in Hyderabad.
-
Autonomous Software: The collaboration aims to leverage mission autonomy software platforms like Hivemind, aligning advanced AI navigation systems directly with local military and export needs.
Five Years of Rapid Acceleration
India’s defense export graph highlights an aggressive upward curve, nearly tripling in value over the last half-decade:
| Financial Year | Total Defence Exports (INR) |
| FY 2021-22 | ~₹12,800 Crore |
| FY 2024-25 | ₹23,622 Crore |
| FY 2025-26 | ₹38,424 Crore |
The Next Frontier: Industry leaders emphasize that the next phase of the Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) mission will depend heavily on deepening technological complexity. The ultimate objective is moving completely beyond component assembly to master advanced materials, foundational software, and proprietary platform designs.
