The Election Commission of India (ECI) has ordered a repoll for the Karimganj North Assembly constituency in Assam, scheduled for today, Saturday, April 11.
The decision followed a rigorous post-poll scrutiny of Form 17A (the register of voters) and other essential poll-day records. The move is part of the ECI’s standard protocol to ensure the absolute integrity of the democratic process.
The Scrutiny Process
The ECI confirmed that the review of documents was conducted smoothly across several regions:
-
Scope: Scrutiny covered 296 Assembly Constituencies across Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry, as well as four bye-election sites in Karnataka, Nagaland, and Tripura.
-
Supervision: The process was overseen by 296 Returning Officers (ROs) and General Observers.
-
Transparency: All 1,899 candidates were notified in advance, and the entire procedure was videographed. Once completed, the documents were re-sealed under official supervision.
Looking Ahead: Tamil Nadu Elections
In a separate high-level briefing, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar met with Central Observers to finalize preparations for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, set for April 23, 2026.
The Commission emphasized a “festive yet fair” atmosphere, instructing observers to maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward:
-
Voter inducement or bribery.
-
Intimidation or violence.
-
Any disruption to a peaceful polling environment.
A “Historic Testimony”
