Authorities in Bihar’s Buxar district have arrested a man for allegedly attempting to strike a deal with a foreign intelligence agency to compromise Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s security. The arrest took place on Thursday night following a tip-off regarding suspicious online activity.
The accused has been identified as Amal Kumar Tiwari, a resident of the Simri locality.
The Digital Trail
According to the Buxar Police, Tiwari’s arrest was triggered by a message he posted on the official website of a US-based intelligence agency.
-
The Offer: In the message, Tiwari reportedly claimed he could provide sensitive information to compromise the Prime Minister’s security in exchange for a significant sum of money.
-
The Tools: Upon raiding his premises, police seized a laptop and mobile phones. Investigators found multiple Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and specialized applications used to access the Dark Web, likely intended to mask his digital footprint.
Links to Cybercrime
Beyond the threats against the PM, the investigation revealed a broader pattern of criminal activity:
-
Identity Theft: Police recovered several fake identity documents from Tiwari’s home, which they believe were being used to facilitate various cybercrimes.
-
Prior Record: During interrogation, Tiwari reportedly confessed to previous offenses, including a prior threat to hack the Kolkata airport website.
Ongoing Investigation
The case has drawn the attention of national security apparatuses. Tiwari is currently being interrogated by both local police and central intelligence agencies to determine if he actually possessed any sensitive information or if the move was a desperate financial scam.
“The accused has confessed to his involvement. We are currently verifying the extent of his digital activities and checking for any links to larger cybercrime syndicates,” the Buxar Police stated.
