In a major expansion strategy beyond its fully electric lineup, BYD India has officially showcased its globally successful DM-i (Dual Mode-Intelligent) Super Plug-In Hybrid technology. Touted as an “electric-first” hybrid system, it is designed to act as a crucial transition bridge for Indian buyers who want the benefits of sustainable electric mobility without the accompanying range anxiety.
The technology is confirmed to debut in the Indian market later this year, underpinning the upcoming BYD Seal U SUV.
What Makes BYD’s DM-i Technology Different?
Unlike traditional strong hybrids that rely primarily on a petrol combustion engine and use an electric motor for minor assistance, BYD’s DM-i architecture reverses this philosophy. It prioritizes electric-drive-first, meaning the vehicle operates like a pure EV for the vast majority of daily city driving, ensuring a quiet, smooth, and highly cost-effective ride.
The system switches seamlessly between three distinct driving modes:
-
EV Mode: Operates 100% on battery power, drawing directly from BYD’s ultra-safe LFP Blade Battery—perfect for urban commutes.
-
HEV Series Mode: The petrol engine acts strictly as an onboard generator, producing electricity to feed the traction motor driving the wheels.
-
HEV Parallel Mode: For highway overtaking or heavy load conditions, both the high-efficiency petrol engine and the electric motors combine forces to deliver maximum performance.
Key Specifications & Performance
At the core of the DM-i system is a highly advanced powertrain configuration engineered for extreme efficiency and performance:

BYD’s Vision for the Indian Market
BYD is no stranger to the plug-in hybrid segment; the Chinese automaker pioneered the world’s first mass-produced PHEV back in 2008 with the F3DM. Today, the brand commands over 35% of the global PHEV market, with more than 8 million hybrid units sold worldwide.
In India, BYD has already built a baseline ecosystem with 14,000 customers and 48 showrooms across 40 cities via its EV lineup (Seal, Sealion 7, Atto 3, and eMax 7).
According to Mr. Rajeev Chauhan, Head of Electric Passenger Vehicles Business at BYD India, the introduction of DM-i tech addresses one of the most pressing infrastructure barriers in India:
“By enabling electric-first driving for daily use while seamlessly supporting long-distance travel, DM-i addresses some of the most pressing barriers to the adoption of sustainable motoring in India… shaping a smarter, more flexible pathway towards sustainable transportation.”
