A massive political and religious showdown has escalated in Punjab following a direct contradiction between the findings of the state government and the Akal Takht—the highest temporal seat of Sikhism.
Just days after the Akal Takht declared Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann “anti-Guru” based on a highly controversial viral video, the Punjab government has struck back. On Thursday, the state administration released an independent forensic report asserting that the individual in the footage is definitely not the Chief Minister, calling the entire episode a “planned conspiracy.”
The Clash Over the Footage
The controversy centers around a 39-second video allegedly showing a man resembling Bhagwant Mann sprinkling alcohol onto images of Sikh gurus.
The crisis deepened when Akal Takht Jathedar Kuldeep Singh Gargaj declared Mann guilty of “lying” to the temporal seat, stating that the Sikh community should sever all ties with him. The Akal Takht based its strict “anti-Guru” verdict on two central forensic reports from laboratories recognized by the Government of India, which concluded the video was authentic and not artificially generated or a deepfake.
However, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Punjab government contested the interpretation of those tests, arguing that while the video itself might not be AI-generated, the central reports never explicitly proved that the person filmed was Mann.
What the New State Forensic Report Reveals
To counter the allegations, Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema and AAP spokesperson Baltej Pannu presented a new technical analysis. The state commissioned two independent, Centre-recognized forensic laboratories outside of Punjab to conduct a frame-by-frame breakdown of the footage.
The new report analyzed 1,191 individual frames and highlighted critical physical disparities between the person in the video and the Chief Minister:
| Metric | Individual in Video | Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann |
| Estimated Height | Approximately 5 feet 10 inches | 5 feet 8 inches |
| Stance & Posture | Displays a specific, distinct physical stance | Completely different habitual posture and stance |
| Physical Build | Mismatched shoulder alignment and body build | Standard baseline build |
| Profiles | Side and back views show no structural match | Standard baseline profiles |
Forensic Conclusion: “Taken together—the facial mismatch, height mismatch, and side/back view comparison—the person in the video is not Bhagwant Mann.”
Political Fallout and Legal Action
Armed with these findings, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has forcefully doubled down on his innocence, labeling the entire controversy as “political propaganda” engineered by his rivals to tarnish his image. Mann suggested the smear campaign is a direct retaliation from opposition forces unhappy with his government’s aggressive policies protecting Punjab’s water resources, agriculture, and youth.
The Chief Minister has officially directed the Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) to launch a full-scale investigation to trace the origin of the video, identify the masterminds behind the legal setup, and bring them to justice.
Meanwhile, the political landscape remains highly volatile. Major opposition parties—including the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), the Congress, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)—have unified under the Akal Takht’s religious decree to demand Mann’s immediate resignation, setting the stage for a prolonged legal and political battle.
