Nearly nine years after first presenting a prototype of the next-generation Roadster, Tesla is set to hold a live demonstration near SpaceX’s McGregor test facility in Waco, Texas.
For viewers in India, the event will be broadcast live on X starting at 6:25 AM IST on Friday, October 16, 2026.
The Evolution of Tesla’s “Halo Car”
First unveiled in 2017 with an initial delivery target of 2020, the $200,000 electric sports car has faced multiple delays. While Chief Executive Elon Musk previously downplayed the car’s financial impact as a “small potato situation”, market analysts view the vehicle as vital to Tesla’s brand identity.
Morningstar analyst Seth Goldstein noted in a recent report:
“Tesla does not currently have a halo car, or high-performance luxury vehicle designed to showcase an automaker’s best engineering and technology. The Roadster will be Tesla’s new halo car.”
Goldstein estimates Tesla will sell roughly 2,000 Roadsters annually—a niche volume compared to the 1.6 million vehicles Tesla delivered last year.
Key Specifications & SpaceX Collaboration
-
Range & Acceleration: In 2017, Musk claimed a 620-mile (1,000 km) range on a single charge. In a 2024 update, he revealed the car had been redesigned to achieve 0 to 60 mph in under 1 second.
-
SpaceX Partnership: Musk hinted that the vehicle incorporates technology created in collaboration with SpaceX, fueling speculation about engineering feats beyond traditional high-performance electric vehicles.
-
Reservations: Reservations remain open at $50,000 per vehicle.
Strategic Shift Toward AI and Autonomous Tech
The Roadster demonstration comes at a time when Tesla is shifting focus from traditional driver-operated vehicles toward artificial intelligence, robotics, and autonomous transport.
Earlier this year, Tesla phased out production of the Model S and Model X to reallocate manufacturing capacity for its Optimus humanoid robots. The company also unveiled the Cybercab, a purpose-built two-seater robotaxi designed without traditional manual controls like steering wheels, pedals, or side mirrors.
