Stepping up from the legendary Yamaha R15 to the newly launched Yamaha R2 requires a price jump ranging from roughly Rs 30,000 to Rs 80,000 (with the standard R2 starting at Rs 2.30 lakh compared to the R15’s Rs 1.71 lakh–Rs 2 lakh range). For that extra investment, Yamaha delivers a more powerful, feature-rich supersport machine.
Here is what the extra money gets you:
-
Significant Performance Boost: The R2 replaces the 155cc engine with an all-new 204cc, liquid-cooled, DOHC single-cylinder engine. It pushes out 26.5 PS and 19.1 Nm—giving you an extra 8.1 PS and 4.9 Nm over the R15—which translates to much stronger acceleration and high-speed stability.
-
Yamaha Ride Control (YRC) & Ride Modes: Unlike the R15, the R2 comes equipped with a ride-by-wire throttle and selectable riding modes (Street, Sport, Rain, and a Custom mode) that alter power delivery on the fly.
-
Upgraded Hardware & Chassis: While the R15 uses Yamaha’s signature Deltabox frame, the R2 is built around an all-new high-tensile steel tube diamond frame. Braking is also upgraded with a Nissin 4-piston front caliper (compared to the R15’s 2-piston unit).
-
Advanced Electronics & Features: All R2 variants come standard with a 5-inch colour TFT screen, traction control, and an assist-and-slipper clutch. Higher variants add a bi-directional quickshifter (allowing both clutchless upshifts and downshifts), adjustable rider footpegs across the range, and a Smart Key keyless ignition system on the flagship R2M.
-
More Accessible Seat Height: Despite being a larger motorcycle, the R2 features an 810 mm seat height, which is 5 mm lower and slightly more approachable than the R15’s 815 mm setup.
The R2’s weight increases slightly to around 149–150 kg (compared to the R15’s 141 kg), but the trade-off is a faster, more technologically advanced entry point into middleweight supersport performance.
