Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was moved by Delhi Police to Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday morning, marking the 21st day of his hunger strike. According to a statement from the hospital, Wangchuk was admitted at 7:40 AM and is currently “stable” but “weak due to prolonged fasting and dehydration,” requiring continuous observation and treatment to restore his body parameters.
Police stated that the relocation followed a Delhi High Court directive instructing the Centre to “do whatever it takes” to save Wangchuk’s life amid his failing health. Prior to his hospitalization, Wangchuk had reportedly lost over eight kilograms during his 20-day protest demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET paper leak controversy.
The intervention has drawn pushback from Wangchuk’s family. His wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, took to social media to demand that no oral or intravenous treatments be administered without the consent of his family and the medical team that had been monitoring him throughout the strike. Speaking to PTI, Angmo stated that Wangchuk was doing fine the previous day, questioning the necessity of the hospital transfer and calling it an infringement on her rights.
