Bentley has officially named its highly anticipated first all-electric vehicle the Torcal, confirming a global reveal date of September 23. The new model represents a major milestone in the British luxury carmaker’s revised electrification strategy.
Following Bentley’s tradition of naming vehicles after striking geographical landmarks—such as the Bentayga, Bacalar, and Batur—the name “Torcal” is inspired by El Torcal de Antequera, a nature reserve in Andalusia, Spain, famed for its unique limestone formations. Additionally, the name plays on the Latin root torquere (meaning “to twist”), a nod to automotive torque.
An initial teaser image shared by the brand highlights a distinct SUV silhouette rather than a sedan or coupe layout. The vehicle’s rear styling features a smoothly tapering roofline, slim taillights embedded with a signature diamond-like pattern, and a blacked-out Bentley badge.
While the Torcal was originally scheduled to break cover sooner, softer global demand for high-end electric vehicles prompted Bentley to adjust its timeline. The luxury marque has also rolled back its target of becoming an EV-only brand by 2030, pivoting to a new roadmap that promises one new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) or battery electric vehicle (BEV) every year until 2035.
Spy shots from public road testing suggest that the Torcal will be slightly smaller than the current petrol-powered Bentayga. Industry expectations point to it sharing platform architecture with the upcoming Porsche Cayenne Electric. If those underpinnings carry over, the Torcal is likely to feature a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive powertrain alongside an 800-volt electrical architecture capable of ultra-fast charging speeds up to 400 kW.
