Volkswagen India has officially expanded its premium SUV lineup with the launch of the Tayron Life at an introductory price of Rs 41.99 lakh (ex-showroom). Strategically positioned Rs 5 lakh below the range-topping R-Line variant, this new entry-level model offers a more understated look and highly practical cabin layout while maintaining the mechanical performance of its flagship sibling. Like the R-Line, the Tayron Life is locally assembled at Volkswagen’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar facility in Maharashtra and competes with premium SUVs like the Skoda Kodiaq and Jeep Meridian.
Refined Exterior Design
The defining difference between the Tayron Life and the top-spec R-Line is the departure from aggressive, sporty cosmetics in favor of a cleaner, more sophisticated road presence.
-
De-chromed Style: The Life trim omits the glossy, blacked-out aesthetic package. Elements such as the front grille, wheel-arch surrounds, door cladding, and rear bumper accents feature a standard finish rather than high-gloss black.
-
Front Fascia: The SUV features a redesigned, cleaner bumper with distinctive L-shaped slats on the grille and a subtle silver trim piece below it. It retains premium Matrix LED headlamps joined by a full-width light bar and an illuminated front VW badge.
-
Footprint & Wheels: Measuring ,4792 mm long with a 2,789 mm wheelbase, the Tayron Life downsizes its footwear to 18-inch “Bologna” alloy wheels (compared to the R-Line’s larger units), contributing to a more restrained side profile.
Interior Layout and Key Features
While the layout inside mirrors the high-end R-Line, the Tayron Life switches out the all-black sport scheme for a premium dual-tone upholstery. Notably, the Life trim is configured as a spacious five-seater (omitting the R-Line’s third row), which unlocks a massive 885-liter boot that can expand up to 2,090 liters with the rear seats folded.
Despite the lower price point, Volkswagen hasn’t compromised on technology or luxury. The feature list includes:
-
A 32.77 cm (13-inch/15-inch class) freestanding touchscreen infotainment system alongside a 26.03 cm Digital Cockpit driver’s display.
-
Wired and wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity with dual smartphone wireless charging.
-
ergoActive electrically adjustable front seats with 12-way adjustment, lumbar support, heating, ventilation, and an 8-program massage function.
-
A panoramic sunroof, three-zone automatic climate control, a 360-degree camera, and a powered, hands-free tailgate.
Safety and Level 2 ADAS
Safety remains a major focal point for the premium SUV. The Tayron Life comes equipped with nine airbags alongside a robust Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) suite packing 14 distinct features. These include adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, exit warning, and automated parking assistance.
Engine, Gearbox, and Drivetrain
Under the hood, the Tayron Life retains the identical powertrain as the R-Line. It is propelled by the proven 2.0-liter TSI EVO turbo-petrol engine that generates 204 hp and 320 Nm of peak torque. This powerplant is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DSG) that distributes power to all four wheels through Volkswagen’s 4MOTION all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. Drivers can also toggle between six selectable drive modes: Eco, Comfort, Sport, Individual, Off-road, and Snow.
