Shankh Mitra, the Indian-origin CEO of US-based healthcare real estate giant Welltower, has emerged as the second-highest-paid chief executive g lobally. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, Mitra received a massive compensation package worth $821 million (approximately Rs 7,744 crore) for his work in 2025.
Mitra’s staggering payout was surpassed only by Elon Musk, whose compensation package was valued at $158 billion. This surge reflects a sharp post-pandemic recovery in executive pay, with 2025 seeing the highest number of nine-figure CEO packages since 2021.
From Kolkata to the Pinnacle of Corporate America
Mitra’s journey highlights a remarkable trajectory from India to the top tier of international business:
-
Academic Roots: Born and raised in Kolkata, he completed his Bachelor of Engineering degree in Instrumentation and Electronics Engineering from Jadavpur University.
-
Move to the US: He moved to the United States to earn an MBA in Applied Value Investing from Columbia Business School, which laid the foundation for his career in finance.
-
Wall Street Foundation: Before entering corporate real estate, Mitra honed his investment expertise in senior roles at premier hedge funds, including Citadel LLC and Millennium Management.
Leading Welltower’s Trillion-Dollar Sector
Mitra joined Welltower—a major Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) specializing in healthcare infrastructure and senior housing—in 2016. Thanks to his sharp operational and investment acumen, he was promoted to Chief Investment Officer in 2018 and formally took the reins as CEO in 2020.
Anatomy of an $821 Million Pay Package
Unlike traditional cash salaries, almost the entirety of Mitra’s compensation is directly tied to the performance of the company.
-
Stock-Heavy Structure: Roughly $789 million of his package consists of a major stock award issued in October. Driven by Welltower’s strong market performance, the value of those shares crossed $1 billion by the end of the year.
-
The Golden Handcuffs (Retention): The payout is strictly tied to long-term targets. Mitra will only receive half of these shares in 2031, contingent on him remaining with the company.
-
Strict Performance Targets: The remaining half of the shares will only vest if Welltower meets aggressive metrics over five years, including expanding its total market value by 45% and outperforming key stock market indices.
A Historic Year for Executive Payouts
The scale of executive wealth creation at Welltower is exceptionally rare. Three other executives at the firm also received packages crossing $100 million, making Welltower one of the few corporations in history to award four executives nine-figure payouts in a single calendar year.
Mitra is not the only Indian-origin leader dominating the global earnings list. Nikesh Arora, CEO of Palo Alto Networks, secured the eighth spot on the global list with a compensation package worth $100 million.
| Global CEO Ranking (2025 Payouts) | Executive | Company | Compensation |
| 1 | Elon Musk | Tesla / SpaceX | $158 Billion |
| 2 | Shankh Mitra | Welltower | $821 Million |
| 3 | George Kurtz | CrowdStrike | $248 Million |
| 4 | Hock Tan | Broadcom | $205 Million |
| … | … | … | … |
| 8 | Nikesh Arora | Palo Alto Networks | $100 Million |
Context: The dramatic spike in compensation highlights a broader macroeconomic trend in 2025 where nearly a dozen global corporate chiefs crossed the $200 million annual earning mark.
