Prime Minister Narendra Modi has etched his name into Indian political history by becoming the nation’s longest-serving elected prime minister, marking an unbroken tenure of 4,399 days in office.
Breaking Records
PM Modi, who first assumed office in May 2014, has officially surpassed the elected tenure of India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
While Nehru served a total of nearly 17 years, his first stint (1947–1952) was as the head of an interim government before national elections were institutionalized. His subsequent tenure as an elected prime minister spanned from May 13, 1952, until his death on May 27, 1964, totaling 4,398 days. Meanwhile, Indira Gandhi’s 14-year leadership remained fragmented due to her defeat in the 1977 general elections following the Emergency.
