US Vice President JD Vance has shared a deeply personal look into his family life, revealing that the tragic assassination of his close friend and conservative influencer, Charlie Kirk, ultimately inspired his wife, Usha Vance, to agree to a fourth child.
In a Wall Street Journal guest op-ed excerpted from his upcoming book, Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith, Vance detailed how a profound moment of grief unexpectedly opened the door to new life.
A Change of Heart Amid Grief
For years, JD Vance had hoped to expand their family, but Usha was hesitant—particularly after his political career thrust them into the intense national spotlight. The couple already shares three children: Ewan (8), Vivek (6), and Mirabel (4).
However, everything changed last year when Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA and Vance’s “best friend and closest confidant,” was fatally shot on a Utah college campus. The Vances flew to Utah to support Kirk’s grieving widow, Erika, and help escort his body back to Arizona.
“As my wife held Charlie Kirk’s widow on the first day of her terrible sorrow, Erika told Usha between sobs that she regretted having only two kids with Charlie,” Vance wrote.
According to the Vice President, that raw, emotional conversation profoundly shifted Usha’s perspective:
“One life was stolen from us, but another was given. I don’t know why God does things like this. But I am grateful to Him that there will soon be another source of joy in our lives.”
Not long after the funeral, Usha became pregnant with their fourth child, a boy.
“I Got Both”
The announcement aligns with JD Vance’s public advocacy for larger American families. During his first public address as vice president, he famously stated he wanted “more babies in the United States of America.”
He lighthearted noted that when he originally decided to run for the vice presidency, Usha gave him an ultimatum: “Well, you can become vice president, or you can have a fourth baby.” Vance joked that because he was “persuasive,” he ultimately ended up with both.
Usha Vance on Expanding Their Family
In a separate interview with NBC, Second Lady Usha Vance shared her own perspective on the decision, reflecting on how her view of family size has evolved over time.
-
Growing Up: She originally grew up in a family of two children and assumed that was the ideal number.
-
The Third Child: After having two children, she felt their family wasn’t quite complete, which led to their third child, Mirabel.
-
The Decision for a Fourth: While she previously felt content with three, she noted that she never entirely closed the door on the idea and found herself becoming “more and more excited about that possibility.”
With the impending arrival of their baby boy, the Vances are set to become only the fourth “second family” in United States history to welcome a baby while in office.
