BYD has officially pulled the wraps off the next-generation Atto 3 (known as the Yuan Plus in China) at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show. The latest iteration of the popular compact SUV brings massive upgrades to its footprint, interior luxury, and—most notably—its charging speeds, thanks to the debut of BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery technology.
The “Flash Charging” Breakthrough
The headline feature of the new Atto 3 is the “Flash Charging” system, which effectively bridges the gap between EV charging and traditional refueling.
-
Speed: Under ideal conditions, the battery can charge from 10% to 97% in just 9 minutes.
-
All-Weather Performance: Even in extreme cold ($-30\text{°C}$), the charging time only increases by approximately 3 minutes.
-
Infrastructure: To support this, BYD is deploying 1,500kW superchargers across its network, aiming for 20,000 stations in China by the end of 2026.
Enhanced Dimensions & Design
The 2026 model has grown significantly, moving toward a more mid-size SUV presence:
-
Exterior: It is 210mm longer and 60mm taller than the previous generation, featuring a sharpened front fascia, semi-flush door handles, and an illuminated rear logo.
-
Storage: Practicality takes a leap with a massive 750-liter boot and a new 180-liter frunk (front trunk) for charging cables and small items.
| Dimension | New Gen Atto 3 | Increase vs. Previous |
| Length | 4,665 mm | +210 mm |
| Width | 1,895 mm | +20 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,770 mm | +50 mm |
Powertrain & Range Options
The new Atto 3 shifts to a Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) layout, offering a more dynamic driving experience compared to the outgoing front-wheel-drive model.
-
Standard Pack: 57.54 kWh battery providing a 540 km CLTC range.
-
Extended Pack: 68.54 kWh battery providing a 630 km CLTC range.
-
Performance: Motor outputs have been bumped to 272 hp and 327 hp respectively, depending on the variant.
Premium Interior & Tech
The cabin has been overhauled to compete with luxury offerings:
-
Seating: New “extra-recline” adjustment for the front passenger and a two-spoke steering wheel.
-
Amenities: A thermoelectrically heated/cooled storage box, 256-color ambient lighting, and a 16-speaker premium audio system.
-
Intelligence: For the first time, the Atto 3 includes a LiDAR-assisted automated driving suite, significantly enhancing its safety and highway pilot capabilities.
With this update, BYD isn’t just iterating on a successful model; it’s attempting to end “range anxiety” once and for all with charging speeds that finally match the convenience of a petrol pump.
