India is heading back to the “Danger Zone.” To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the original 1986 blockbuster, Paramount Pictures has announced a special theatrical event that will bring both the classic Top Gun and its record-breaking sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, back to the big screen.
The re-release is scheduled for a one-week-only run beginning May 15, 2026.
The Double-Feature Event
This limited theatrical run allows audiences to experience the full evolution of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell across four decades:
-
Top Gun (1986): Directed by the late Tony Scott, this is the film that defined 80s cool, popularized aviator sunglasses, and cemented Tom Cruise as a global superstar.
-
Top Gun: Maverick (2022): The Joseph Kosinski-directed sequel became a cultural phenomenon, grossing over $1.5 billion and earning credit for revitalizing the global theater industry post-pandemic.
Top Gun 3: It’s Officially Happening
The re-release announcement comes on the heels of major news from CinemaCon 2026 in Las Vegas (held in mid-April). Paramount Pictures officially confirmed that Top Gun 3 is in development.
What we know so far about the third installment:
-
The Return of Maverick: Tom Cruise is officially set to return as Captain Pete Mitchell.
-
The Team: Producer Jerry Bruckheimer is back, and Ehren Kruger (who co-wrote Maverick) is currently penning the script.
-
Director Search: While Joseph Kosinski directed the second film to massive success, reports suggest he may not return for the third due to a packed schedule (including a Miami Vice reboot). Paramount is currently vetting new directors to take the helm.
-
Potential Cast: While not yet confirmed, the studio is reportedly looking to bring back the “new generation” stars from the second film, including Miles Teller (Rooster) and Glen Powell (Hangman).
A Milestone Year for Tom Cruise
2026 is shaping up to be a massive year for Cruise. Along with the Top Gun 40th anniversary celebrations and the Top Gun 3 announcement, the actor is also coming off the recent completion of Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s latest film, Digger, and is preparing for the release of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.
