Harley-Davidson’s electric motorcycle offshoot, LiveWire, has officially entered production for its highly anticipated S4 Honcho lineup. Aimed directly at young riders, motorhome travelers, and urban commuters, these 125cc-equivalent electric mini-motos represent LiveWire’s boldest pivot yet: moving away from expensive full-sized cruisers toward accessible, lightweight playbikes.
Developed in close collaboration with Taiwanese scooter giant Kymco, the S4 Honcho series launches in two distinct flavors: the off-road Trail and the road-legal Street.
The Lineup: Street Legal vs. Dirt Playground
While both models share the exact same skeletal DNA, they are stripped down and kitted out for entirely different environments.
-
S4 Honcho Street (Urban Commuter): Built to take on internal combustion entry-levels like the Honda Grom, the Street comes fully equipped for public roads. It features standard rearview mirrors, complete LED road lighting (headlamp, indicators, and taillight), a license plate holder, and a small circular digital instrument cluster. It rides on tarmac-friendly 12-inch cast wheels and road-biased rubber.
-
S4 Honcho Trail (Off-Road Only): This version skips the heavy road gear to prioritize raw, dirt-flinging fun. It ditches the headlight in favor of a clean, vintage-style front number plate and trades road tires for thick, knobby off-road rubber. It features a slightly taller handlebar, raised trail suspension, and increased ground clearance.
Powertrain & Real-World Performance
The real innovation sits right under the flip-up seat. The S4 Honcho is the first-ever LiveWire product to feature swappable, removable batteries—utilizing Kymco’s modular Ionex battery standard. This is a massive win for city apartments or campus students who lack garage charging infrastructure.
-
Charging: Pulling power from a standard wall outlet, the dual-pack configuration can replenish from 20% to 80% in approximately two hours.
-
The Riding Feel: Rather than utilizing a silent, direct-drive hub motor in the rear wheel, LiveWire opted for a mid-mounted electric motor mated to a traditional chain drive. This preserves a tactile, authentic motorcycle feel and delivers instant, punchy torque off the line.
-
Controls: Operating the S4 Honcho feels closer to a modern scooter than a traditional motorcycle. It features handlebar-mounted levers for both the front and rear hydraulic disc brakes, doing away with the foot pedal entirely. It also includes a dedicated electronic reverse gear across both models to make parking and trail-maneuvering effortless.
Pricing and Availability
The S4 Honcho lineup represents the lowest financial barrier to entry in LiveWire’s history. It is slated to land in dealerships internationally later this summer.
| Variant | Weight | Seat Height | Global Base Price | Estimated Indian Equivalent |
| S4 Honcho Trail | 114.7 kg | 736.6 mm | GBP 4,599 / USD 4,999 | ~₹5.88 Lakh |
| S4 Honcho Street | 120.6 kg | 762.0 mm | GBP 4,999 / USD 5,499 | ~₹6.39 Lakh |
While they still command a premium over entry-level petrol alternatives, the combination of a rugged tubular steel frame (which uses the aluminum battery vault as a structural member), low approachable seat heights, and instant electric grunt makes the Honcho an enticing gateway drug for the next generation of riders.
