Reflecting on a career spanning nearly two decades across multiple regional film ecosystems, actor Tamannaah Bhatia has sparked a conversation regarding gender representation and filmmaking perspectives in Indian cinema. Speaking candidly about her tenure in mainstream commercial cinema, she noted that parts of the South Indian film industry often carry a distinct “patriarchal vibe” or a screen gaze that is “not very complimenting” to female leads.
The Contrast in Filmmaking “Gazes”
During an interview with Forbes India, Tamannaah differentiated between the systemic expectations placed on female actors in mainstream commercial South cinema versus the Hindi film industry (Bollywood).
“It’s a very specific gaze. It’s a patriarchal sort of vibe or it’s a gaze that’s not very complimenting… The South needed that star quality to be able to pull that [musical aspect] off, so I personally feel that cinema is as restrictive, or even more restrictive, in that sense… when you want to make it from a commercial standpoint.”

By contrast, she observed that Bollywood has traditionally accommodated a distinct segmentation, allowing actors to choose paths more freely:
-
The Artistic/Content Route: Actors can purely pursue character-driven, realistic cinema without the obligation of performing high-glamour, commercial song-and-dance numbers.
-
The Commercial Route: Mainstream blockbusters heavily centered on mass appeal.
-
The Superstardom Sweet Spot: She emphasized that the Hindi film industry offers room to seamlessly pivot between both, adding that female actors who achieve multi-decade longevity are almost always those who master the delicate balance of high performance and mass glamour.
Over Two Decades of Industry Balance
Tamannaah clarified that these insights reflect her individual experiences steering a massive filmography. Having worked extensively across Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi film circuits, she has headlined over 90 cinematic and streaming projects.
| Broad Appeal Blockbusters | Nuanced & Streaming Content |
| Baahubali: The Beginning & The Conclusion | Jee Karda (Prime Video) |
| Oopiri / Thozha | Aakhiri Sach (Disney+ Hotstar) |
| Aranmanai 4 | Do You Wanna Partner |
Moving forward, the actor is slated to transition back to Hindi cinema with the upcoming supernatural mystery thriller Vvan – Force of the Forest, starring alongside Sidharth Malhotra. Co-produced by Balaji Telefilms and TVF Motion Pictures, the film follows a city-bred skeptic confronting ancient folk forces and is slated for a theatrical release on August 27, 2026.
