With the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) calling for a three-day nationwide bank strike from September 28 to September 30, 2026, major public sector lenders like the State Bank of India (SBI) have issued customer advisories.
Because the strike follows immediately after the fourth Saturday and Sunday (September 26 and 27), bank branches could face restricted access for five consecutive days.
What Services Will Remain Available?
Banks are taking steps to keep essential technology-driven and alternative channels running, ensuring routine tasks can be managed without branch visits:
-
Digital & Mobile Banking: Platforms like Internet Banking, mobile banking apps, YONO, and Unified Payments Interface (UPI) will function normally for fund transfers, bill payments, and online transactions.
-
ATMs & ADWMs: Automated Teller Machines and Automated Deposit and Withdrawal Machines will remain operational for cash withdrawals and basic cash-handling requirements. Customers are advised to stock up on cash in advance.
-
Customer Service Points (CSPs): Business correspondent and customer service outlets will remain available for select basic banking services.
What Services Will Be Affected?
Any service requiring physical documentation, manual verification, or staff-assisted branch processing is expected to face severe delays or complete disruption depending on employee participation:
-
Branch Operations: Over-the-counter cash deposits and withdrawals, passbook updates, and account opening/modification.
-
Cheque Clearances: Physical cheque processing and clearing house operations will be stalled during the strike days.
-
Loan & Credit Processing: Formal loan evaluations, document submissions, and specialized bank clearances requiring physical manager approvals.
