Sanju Samson delivered a commanding performance in the first T20I against Afghanistan, scoring 57 runs off just 22 balls as India comfortably chased down the 160-run target in 14.5 overs.
Samson and Abhishek Sharma provided India with a strong start, building an 88-run partnership for the opening wicket. Samson’s explosive innings helped India remain in control throughout the chase and also quietened the growing debate surrounding his place in the team amid the emergence of 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
Samson Calls Sooryavanshi and Abhishek Teammates, Not Rivals
After the match, Samson was asked about the competition for the two opening positions in India’s T20I side. The wicketkeeper-batter said that while the rivalry may be discussed outside the team, the players themselves remain focused on representing India and winning matches.
“I think they (Sooryavanshi and Abhishek Sharma) are competitors for the outside world, but we are a team, and we are playing for our country. We want to win the game first, and then it comes down to the other individuals. We cannot sulk or be in a negative frame of mind, thinking, ‘Oh, I did not get it, why was it given to him?’ Those kinds of mindsets do not work here,” Samson told reporters.
Samson emphasised that there is no negativity within the squad over selection decisions or playing opportunities.
‘Outside Noise’ Does Affect Indian Cricketers
Samson also addressed the discussions on social media and opinions from former cricketers regarding India’s opening combination. Some former players have argued that Sooryavanshi should replace Samson, while others believe Abhishek Sharma could make way for the teenage batter.
Although Samson generally tries to avoid online commentary, he admitted that he sometimes comes across such remarks.
“I try to switch the Wi-Fi off. But sometimes the Wi-Fi gets switched on, and comments become visible. Some senior player says something. So I think it is very normal,” he said.
He added that external criticism can affect players, but maintaining the right mindset is essential.
“Definitely, outside noise does affect cricketers in India. But you need to be very clear about your mindset, how you need to prepare, and the mindset you need to play with,” Samson said.
‘We Are Not Robots’: Samson Opens Up About Criticism
Samson acknowledged that criticism has affected him in the past, particularly when he was less experienced. However, he said he has learned to manage external pressure more effectively.
“I think I have been mature enough and experienced enough to know how to handle it. Earlier, it used to hurt a little. I am not a machine. We are not robots, that we can say, ‘No, it does not affect me.’ Definitely, it affects you,” Samson said.
He explained that allowing outside criticism to dominate his thoughts could negatively affect his batting.
“If I paid attention to those things, I could not bat like this. Before hitting a shot, I would think ten times, ‘Oh, if I get out, there will be Wi-Fi problems again.’ So instead, I tell myself, ‘No problem’,” he added.
Will Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Return for the Next Match?
Samson and Abhishek Sharma have featured in the opening matches of the series. However, one of them could make way for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in the next game.
India captain Shreyas Iyer reportedly hinted at Sooryavanshi’s possible return to the playing XI for the final match of the series. The selection decision could determine how India manages its opening combination going forward.
