In a candid conversation with Suhasini Maniratnam on Jos Alukkas’ YouTube channel, actor Pooja Bedi has once again challenged the traditional stigma surrounding divorce. Known for her outspoken nature, Bedi described her separation from ex-husband Farhan Furniturewala as a positive transition rather than a failure, emphasizing that a decade of good marriage shouldn’t mandate “50 bad years” to follow.
The Decision to Walk Away
Bedi married into a conventional family at 24, a move that eventually required her to leave the film industry to fulfill traditional roles. After 12 years and two children—Alaya F and Omar—she decided to separate when her children were still toddlers.
-
No Regrets: Bedi clarified that while she made mistakes within the marriage, the act of getting married itself was not one of them.
-
Prioritizing Happiness: She expressed deep gratitude for the time spent together but stood firm on her decision to leave when the relationship reached its natural conclusion.
A “Modern” Extended Family
One of the most striking parts of the interview was Bedi’s description of her current relationship with her ex-husband and his new family.
-
Best Friends: Farhan remains her “best friend” to this day.
-
Bond with Layla: Bedi shared that she has known Farhan’s current wife, Layla, since junior KG. The relationship is so cordial that her daughter, Alaya F, considers Layla and her son, Zaan, indispensable parts of her life.
-
The Power of Example: Bedi attributed her healthy outlook to her parents, Kabir and Protima Bedi. She recalled her father staying with them while on his honeymoon with his second wife, teaching her that divorce can be handled with immense mutual respect.
Redefining the Narrative
By labeling divorce as “inclusive” and a “journey,” Pooja Bedi continues to push for a cultural shift in how India views broken marriages. For her, the end of a legal contract did not mean the end of a family; instead, she argues, it simply made the family “bigger.”
