Former Prime Minister of Pakistan and founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, Imran Khan, met with his sister, Noreen Niazi, at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail. The meeting marked the first time Khan was permitted family visitation in nine months following a directive from the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
Key Details of the Visit
-
Meeting with Sister: Noreen Niazi met Khan for approximately 15 minutes in the jail’s conference room. Their conversation focused on his medical condition and recent legal developments. Reports from Dawn noted that Niazi briefed Khan on the apex court’s directive ordering his temporary transfer to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for a medical evaluation.
-
Restricted Access: Other family members, including his sisters Aleema Khan and Uzma Khan, as well as cousin Qasim Zaman and senior PTI political figures, were barred by security officials from entering the premises.
-
Conditions of Relief: The Supreme Court cautioned all involved parties that utilizing these court-mandated family visits for political commentary or leverage could lead to the immediate revocation of the visitation rights.
Bushra Bibi Meets Family
Separately, Khan’s spouse, Bushra Bibi, who is also imprisoned at Adiala Jail, was granted a 40-minute meeting in the conference room. She met with her children, Musa and Mubashara Maneka, along with her sister-in-law Mehrunnisa.
Court Directives on Medical Treatment
The Supreme Court directed government and prison authorities to shift Imran Khan to Shifa International Hospital within two days for comprehensive care. Khan is scheduled to remain under medical supervision there until at least mid-September, when the court plans to review subsequent petitions regarding his health and private medical arrangements. Khan has been held in custody since August 2023 and is currently serving a 14-year sentence linked to the Al-Qadir Trust case.
