Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor delivered a sharp and characteristic response when questioned by reporters regarding Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi’s recent four-day trip to Vietnam amid ongoing political protests in the national capital.
Refusing to be drawn into explaining the Congress leader’s itinerary, Tharoor bluntly stated, “I am not a travel agent.”
The Flashpoint: Vietnam Visit Amid Domestic Protests
Rahul Gandhi’s departure for a four-day personal trip to Vietnam—following his participation in the Goy Rakhon Yatra in Goa—has sparked a fresh political slugfest. The timing of the visit coincided with intense protests led by the Opposition and various groups demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Seizing the opportunity, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a scathing attack on the Congress leader. The ruling party shared a purported video on social media showing Gandhi aboard a flight, accusing him of abandoning domestic political agitation for a vacation.
Senior BJP figures, including national spokespersons, mocked Gandhi’s absence, alleging a pattern of taking extended breaks abroad immediately after spearheading political campaigns.
Tharoor’s Pithy Retort
While speaking to journalists in Kerala, Tharoor made it clear he had no intention of fielding questions about another leader’s personal travel.
“I am not a travel agent. There is no point in asking me that question,” Tharoor told reporters. “Why did I leave Delhi and come here now? Every person has certain responsibilities. So, I cannot comment on that.”
By drawing a line between individual schedules and party collective action, Tharoor sidestepped the controversy, leaving the defense of Gandhi’s timeline to other party spokespersons.
Congress Claps Back
Defending the Leader of the Opposition, former Congress MP Sandeep Dikshit pushed back against the BJP’s criticism, arguing that leaders are entitled to personal lives and regular duties.
“Do others not travel outside on this day? Rahul Gandhi is an individual, the Leader of the Opposition; he has duties,” Dikshit said, pointing out that Gandhi frequently uses his international travels to interact with students and global intellectuals.
