Following the recent assembly elections, Assam is preparing for a transition of power. Caretaker Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has outlined a clear timeline for the formation of the new government, with the official swearing-in ceremony scheduled for May 12, 2026, at 11:00 AM.
The political activity will peak on May 10, when the BJP and the broader NDA alliance finalize their leadership choices.
The Road to Government Formation
The process will follow a structured three-step approach on Sunday, May 10:
-
BJP Legislature Party Meeting: The newly elected BJP MLAs will meet to formally elect their leader for the state.
-
NDA Joint Meeting (11:00 AM): A joint meeting including the BJP and its allies (such as the AGP) will be held to elect the overall NDA leader.
-
Claiming Power (12:00 PM): NDA leaders will meet the Governor of Assam to submit their formal claim to form the next government.
A High-Profile Swearing-In Ceremony
The ceremony, to be held at the Khanapara Veterinary Field, is expected to be a massive show of strength for the NDA. Caretaker CM Sarma noted several key details about the guest list:
-
Political Presence: Chief Ministers from 20 different states are expected to attend.
-
Religious Leaders: Invitations have been extended to Satradhikars (heads of Vaishnavite monasteries) and other religious heads, honoring Assam’s spiritual heritage.
-
Grassroots & Industry: The event will see attendance from industrialists as well as presidents of the BJP and AGP booth committees, highlighting the alliance’s focus on both development and grassroots organization.
The Leadership Question
While Himanta Biswa Sarma has been the face of the government and is overseeing the arrangements, all eyes are on the May 10 meeting to see if the party continues with the incumbent leadership or introduces a new face for the next term.
Once the Governor grants permission on Sunday afternoon, the administrative process of cabinet selection and government structuring will begin immediately ahead of Tuesday’s ceremony.
