In a significant political maneuver to stabilize its recently formed government, Tamil Nadu’s ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on Wednesday extended a formal invitation to its outside allies—the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Communist Party of India (CPI), the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML)—to officially join the state cabinet.
TVK senior leader and Public Works Department (PWD) and Sports Minister, Aadhav Arjuna, confirmed that sharing power with allies was Chief Minister Joseph Vijay’s “wish and dream.” He simultaneously dismissed rumors that the CPM would withdraw its support if breakaway factions of the opposition AIADMK were aligned with the ruling coalition.
The Delicate Assembly Arithmetic
The recent state elections, which concluded with results on April 23, 2026, delivered a highly fractured mandate that completely dismantled decades of two-party dominance by the DMK and AIADMK. While actor-turned-politician Joseph Vijay pulled off a historic transition to the Chief Minister’s office, his party fell just short of a standalone majority.
| Political Alignment Baseline | Individual Seat Count | Status in Government |
| Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) | 107 MLAs (After Vijay vacated Trichy East) | Core Ruling Party |
| Indian National Congress (INC) | 5 MLAs | Confirmed to join the Cabinet |
| Outside Allies (VCK, CPM, CPI, IUML) | 8 MLAs (2 seats each) | Currently providing outside legislative support |
| Current Coalition Strength | 120 MLAs | Majority Mark: 118 |
| Rebel AIADMK Faction (CV Shanmugam) | ~25 MLAs | Voted for TVK in the crucial trust vote |
With a wafer-thin majority of just two seats above the baseline 118 mark, the TVK is looking to solidify its legislative floor. Speculation regarding a major cabinet expansion has intensified, with the Congress already locked in to receive ministerial portfolios.
Rebel AIADMK Faction Alters the Power Dynamics
The political landscape shifted dramatically last week during the government’s mandatory trust vote. A rebel faction of 25 AIADMK MLAs, led by senior leader CV Shanmugam, defied party boss Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) to vote in favor of Joseph Vijay’s government.
Addressing the status of these rebel legislators, Aadhav Arjuna stated:
“CV Shanmugam leads the faction… it is not for power. The MLAs have the legal right to choose whom they support. AIADMK cadre realized that any internal backroom tie-up with the DMK to subvert the election mandate was wrong, which is why they chose to support the TVK.”
Arjuna alleged that the DMK and EPS had quietly attempted to forge an unprecedented, highly unlikely alliance between the two Dravidian behemoths to seize power after the fractured verdict. He asserted that the TVK’s allies came together explicitly to “save democracy.”
The Strategic Safeguard
The introduction of Shanmugam’s 25 rebel MLAs gives Chief Minister Vijay a massive mathematical safety net. From a pure numbers standpoint, even if adding the AIADMK rebels creates ideological friction that prompts both Left parties and the VCK to completely withdraw their support, the government’s tally would still climb to 137 seats—placing the TVK a comfortable 19 seats ahead of the majority threshold.
While Arjuna remained tight-lipped about the exact portfolio allocations, he concluded by stating that TVK chief Joseph Vijay will personally make an official announcement regarding the cabinet expansion shortly.
