Key Highlights
-
The Allegation: Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi launched a fierce attack on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on X, calling it an “all-male anti-constitutional cult” with patriarchal views.
-
BJP’s Retort: BJP leaders dismissed the remarks as “childish” and ill-informed, pointing to the active existence of the RSS’s women’s wing and questioning gender representation within the Congress party.
-
Broader Context: The exchange follows Gandhi’s ongoing efforts to highlight ideological and gender equality debates, including his recent remarks referencing ancient texts and patriarchal structures.
Rahul Gandhi’s Attack on the RSS
In a sharp post on X, Rahul Gandhi criticized the ideological parent of the ruling BJP, accusing it of fostering an exclusionary environment:
“The RSS is an all-male anti-constitutional cult that believes women are the property of men,” Gandhi posted, adding that he finds joy in fighting the organization and claiming that many women associated with the Sangh ideological ecosystem secretly support his stance.
Invoking spiritual themes, he wrote, “I believe in Shiva-Shakti. That’s why it gives me such joy to fight them. What’s beautiful is that many of their ‘own’ women are on my side.”
BJP Calls Remarks “Childish” and Hypocritical
The comments triggered immediate and sharp pushback from BJP leaders across the country, who accused the Congress leader of lacking basic awareness and practicing hypocrisy:
-
Ram Kadam (BJP MLA, Maharashtra): Dismissed Gandhi’s comments as “childish” and unbefitting of a Leader of the Opposition. He noted that the RSS operates an extensive nationwide women’s wing where female members work with high prominence.
-
N Ramchander Rao (Telangana BJP Chief): Questioned the internal leadership structure of the Congress party regarding gender parity:
“Rahul Gandhi seems to be forgetting how male-dominated his party is. Wherever they are ruling, let him answer how many women chief ministers there are. BJP has got a woman chief minister in the capital.”
Rao also challenged the Congress on legislative matters, asking why the party opposed specific frameworks surrounding the women’s reservation bill, and criticized the party over internal disciplinary actions related to sexual misconduct allegations involving campus affiliates.
A Persistent Ideological Flashpoint
The latest controversy underscores a deepening political battle lines over gender representation and social values. Gandhi has frequently targeted conservative ideological frameworks, including an address at a youth outreach program (‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’) in Pune last August, where he criticized patriarchal texts and raised slogans against systemic misogyny—remarks that the BJP similarly dismissed as political posturing and PR.
