In a major administrative shift, Jantar Mantar—which has long served as Delhi’s primary, high-profile protest site in the heart of the capital—has been officially de-notified as a venue for demonstrations.
The decision follows recommendations from a special committee constituted by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to review and identify alternative proper venues for citizens to exercise their democratic right to protest.
Three New Designated Protest Venues
To replace Jantar Mantar, the Delhi Police has finalized and notified three new locations across the capital for organizing public demonstrations:
-
Ramlila Ground (Central/Old Delhi)
-
Burari Ground (North Delhi)
-
CBD Ground (East Delhi)
According to an official order issued by Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar, the new guidelines modify the previous standing order regarding the organization of public protests.
Context and Political Timing
The de-notification comes right in the middle of heightened political demonstrations in central Delhi led by the Opposition bloc INDIA and political groups protesting against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the special intensive revision (SIR) controversy.
While the move is expected to face sharp criticism from opposition parties who may view it as an effort to curb demonstrations near key government corridors, authorities note that shifting protest sites away from central Delhi will significantly ease chronic traffic gridlocks around vital government installations.
Next Steps & Standard Operating Procedures
The Delhi Police has announced that detailed and revised Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) governing permissions, safety regulations, and crowd management at Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground, and CBD Ground will be issued separately.
