Rail connectivity across Upper Assam has been successfully restored following severe flood-induced disruptions, officials from the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) confirmed today. The affected section between Simaluguri and adjoining areas in Assam’s Sivasagar district—under the Tinsukia Division—has been repaired, paving the way for the resumption of crucial passenger and freight movement.
General Manager of Northeast Frontier Railway, Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, personally inspected the repaired tracks, bridges, and underlying infrastructure to assess operational safety before authorizing train movement.
Humanitarian Precautions: Diesel-Only Operations
During the ground inspection, officials observed that numerous flood-displaced villagers, along with their personal belongings and livestock, were taking shelter directly on or near the railway embankments due to high water levels in surrounding areas.
To prioritize public safety and prevent potential electrocution hazards, railway authorities decided to restrict initial train movements along the restored section strictly to diesel-hauled locomotives. Electric train operations will remain suspended until flood conditions subside and residents are able to safely return to their homes.

Direct Guwahati–Dibrugarh Link Restored
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the development in a social media update, highlighting that the critical track section connecting Selenghat, Amguri, Simaluguri, and Sivasagar Town was made fully operational.
The restoration re-establishes direct railway connectivity between Guwahati and Dibrugarh via Lumding and Sivasagar. The Chief Minister expressed gratitude to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and the entire Northeast Frontier Railway team for their swift work in reconnecting Upper Assam with the rest of the nation.
