Twenty-five years after its historic release, the legacy of the Oscar-nominated sports drama Lagaan (2001) continues to burn bright. To mark the film’s silver jubilee, lead actor-producer Aamir Khan and British co-star Rachel Shelley reunited in London during a special commemorative event hosted by Aamir Khan Productions at the Indian Film Festival London.
Shelley, who won over millions of hearts worldwide with her portrayal of the compassionate Elizabeth Russell, took to Instagram to share her joy. She posted a series of images from the celebratory Sunday morning event—held in collaboration with the BFI Film Academy and IMAX UK—featuring her and a smiling Aamir Khan, alongside snapshots of Khan addressing the audience.
“The Audience Completes the Film”
This London reunion follows a deeply personal video message Shelley posted a month prior, reflecting on how deeply the film embedded itself into her life.
“Sometimes I feel like it was just yesterday,” Shelley remarked. “And other times, it feels like another lifetime ago… It’s with me every day. It’s informed every piece of work I have ever done since.”
She was also quick to credit the global audience for sustaining the film’s cross-generational appeal. “I have to say that I feel that, as the cast and crew, we make the film,” she explained. “But the audience, by watching it, by giving it so much love and support over the years, you’re the ones who complete the film.”
A Historic Legacy
Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, Lagaan is widely considered a landmark moment in Indian cinema. Set in 1893 during the British Raj, the narrative follows a group of drought-ravaged villagers led by Bhuvan (Aamir Khan) who wager their entire future on a high-stakes game of cricket against their colonial rulers to waive a crippling tax (lagaan).
Shelley’s character, Elizabeth Russell, played a pivotal structural role in the plot as the sister of the antagonistic Captain Andrew Russell (Paul Blackthorne). Defying her brother, Elizabeth secretly teaches Bhuvan and his makeshift team the foundational rules of cricket, acting as a crucial ally and cementing her place in Bollywood history.
